During the course of the offseason, Scorers 1st members look back on their pro season overseas and look ahead to their summer approach to growing their game, while offering some advice to rookies along the way...
This week we feature former Northern Iowa standout shooting guard, Marc Sonnen. For the past two seasons, Sonnen has played for the Bayer Giants Leverkusen in both ProB and ProA Germany, where last season he averaged 10.7 points, 3.5 rebounds and 1.9 assists per game, while shooting 45% from the field and 33% from beyond the arc.
For those not familiar with your game, can you give us the scouting report on Marc Sonnen? I am a hard-nose defender that's always going to guard the best guard on the other team. I'm a good shooter with a very good basketball IQ and a "team first" type of player.
Coming out of Northern Iowa, how has your overall game grown during your professional career? I have become a lot better putting the ball on the floor and being more aggressive to the basket. I am able to use the ball screen a lot better and also better at finishing at the rim.
What did you learn the most about yourself as a person/player this past season? I have learned that I need to start off the game being more aggressive attacking the rim to get better shots and a better rhythm shooting.
What is your focus and approach to getting better this offseason? My main focus is getting myself stronger and quicker this offseason. I also need to work hard on my ball handling and become more consistent shooter and scorer.
If you could share any words of wisdom for guys making the jump from college to playing professionally what would it be? Come in ready to go and in shape which all starts with putting the time in the gym and weight room this summer. Also, be open to change and embrace the people and community you are playing in. Lastly is being able to understand the game and rules overseas.
