Every year thousands of former college basketball players venture overseas to play professional basketball in hopes of competing at the highest level and growing their game to the next level -- former Valparaiso University guard Erik Buggs is one of those guys. After two seasons playing in Switzerland, Buggs will spend the 2015-16 season with U. Catolatica in Santiago, Chile, where he'll take you inside his life on and off of the court in pro basketball with his blog, "Inside My Pro Basketball Life"...
My time in Chile so far has been one filled with many first experiences.
I experienced my first earthquake which turned out to be a massive event that made news around the world. That definitely was something interesting and scary considering we don't have anything like that back in Memphis. I also had the pleasure of my longest road trip of my career -- a 17 hour bus trip to the Chiloe Island. Not only did we take the team bus there but we also had the experience of a ferry ride from the mainland to the island. This was indeed something I have never done and I admit, I was a bit overwhelmed upon finding out this would be our way of transporting our bus from spot to spot.
The problem wasn't the ferry. It was learning that it wasn't just our large team bus that would be transported, but several other vehicles would be ferried as well. I must say, I thoroughly enjoyed the experience after we finally got settled and moving.
The preseason came and went by really quickly.
We participated in all the media day activities and met with the sponsors of the club. But what really had my attention -- playing in a preseason tournament against some of the top teams in the league. This was a chance to show the other teams in the league what type of competitor I am and also a chance to see what we have to look forward to this coming season. We played really well! We earned the 3rd place ranking in the tournament but most importantly ,we gelled as a team and also showed the other teams in the league that we would be able to compete with anyone we matched up against.
So far time has really been flying this season.
We are currently 4 games into the season and have a total of 18 games left in the regular season. The hard work this summer with FAST P.A.C.E Athletics has definitely paid off and it is showing in my statistics and in my well-rounded play. We are a very young team and with that a lot is required from the two import players, being myself and Jordan Clarke, but we have responded very well. We as a team are currently 3-1 and at the top of the standings in the league. Over the past 4 games I have posted a pretty good stat line. I am averaging roughly 20 points, 4.5 rebounds, 3.3 assist, and 2 steals a game. The best thing I’m happy to display is my 3 point percentage which is currently 58%(15-26)! I’m definitely enjoying the season so far and se still have a long way to go before the playoffs until the playoffs are here.
I definitely believe we have a shot at doing something really surprising in this league!
