After signing with Scorers 1st in the spring of 2014 I was left with the frequently asked question from friends and family for aspiring professional athletes -- “Where and When?”. It can be an unknown time. But after finishing my college career at Fresno State and Santa Clara, those questions soon became answers thanks to trusting in the process of becoming a professional basketball player.
I had received an offer to go play in the National 2 league in France for a club by the name of, Basket Club Gries Oberhoffen. After speaking with family, college coach (Kerry Keating), and my agent (Gerrit- Kersten-Thiele) it was evident that this was an opportunity that I could not pass on.
My first season in France was a huge learning opportunity for me. Everything was new -- new culture, new system, new environment, new language and so on. Luckily, I had a great support system to help me stay focused during this transition, while you are so far from home. The amount of support I received on and off the court from teammates, management, and fans was overwhelming. They motivated us to perform at a high level day and day out. Our team performance was predicated mainly on hustle and desire. These attributes led us to a second place finish and a playoff appearance. Overall, my experience with BCGO was extremely rewarding and memorable.
I entered the offseason hungrier than ever. In France I realized a lot about my game (strengths and opportunities), so during the summer of 2015, I was determined to attack my opportunities. I did this by training with legendary strength and conditioning coach Anthony Eggleton and skills trainer Bryan Gardere. Working with these two not only helped me improve my athleticism and skill-set, it also put me in the company of other top-level professionals. Training with guys who have the same drive and passion for the game, helped each individual compete and improve and was inspiring. I also used the Scorers 1st Showcase in Las Vegas the previous summer and that July to develop my game and network with other players, coaches, scouts and front office people at that two-day event.
The hardwork that offseason paid off --in October of 2015, I received an offer to play in Germany Pro B for the Iserlohn Kangaroos. After a long summer of training, waiting and negotiating, our management team at Scorers 1st found a situation that fit me and my game.
This season with the Kangaroos has been nothing but positive. As a team, we are very dangerous. We are confident we have every piece possible to win a championship. The best part about our team is our cohesiveness. We have an extreme amount of selflessness, which each player demonstrates. This starts with our Coach Matthias Grothe. He has a way of being tough, fair, and uplifting all in one. Therefore, each player is a threat at any given time. This season we finished up the regular season Pro B North Champions, which granted us the No. 1 seed entering the playoffs. We most recently defeated, Leipzig the 8th seed out the South (series 2-0) in the first game. We are now waiting to see which team we face in the quarterfinals. In the meantime, we are working hard to improve. Overall, we are excited about the future, and keeping our eyes on all the steps we need to take in order to become champions.
Looking back on this time and my career over these past two season, I am very thankful and have learned so much. I've learned to trust the people you work with, the timing in this business and to keep working hard toward your goals as a professional.
