"UCLA guard Japreece Dean is primed to shine at the next level as she heads to the WNBA Draft. The do-it-all point-woman was an All-Pac-12 honoree, and one of only seven D-1 hoopers with at least 13 points and 5.5 assists per game."
The dynamic guard was the unquestioned leader for the #9 ranked Bruins, who finished the season 26-5 and were set for a deep NCAA Tournament run before the 2019-20 season was abruptly concluded.
In the NCAA's toughest conference, Japreece put her skills on full display. Forcing defenses to account for her speed and decision making in transition. In the half court her combination of elite level ball handling and ultra quick first step/jab step allow her to blow past opponents to create for teammates, rise to a pull up jumper, or finish at the rim. Excelled in isolations as defenders had a hard time dealing with her ability to change direction and pace on a dime. Pick n roll situations also allowed Japreece to show off footwork, creativity, and IQ when attacking various defense schemes. Undervalued is her ability to catch and shoot with her feet set or shoot from range behind a screen.
Defensively Japreece has great foot speed, quick hands, and has the ability to pressure the ball full court. She also shows great instincts when baiting ball handlers into turnovers and digging down on unsuspecting post players.
Her value on the court might only be overshadowed by her value to coaches and teammates. UCLA Head Coach Cori Close said, "Dean just loves the games so much, and she changed our whole culture with her love of the game. Her love was so infectious that things got done...she got everyone to pick up and never had to tell anyone about it. It was just like this is what we do if we're going to be about pursuing championships. You show up to pick-up, you're going to do the extra work."
